Field excursion to Wachau Valley a UNESCO World heritage

The ASDRR is offering a multiday field excursion to broaden your knowledge in the area of rock fall hazards.

  • Topographic and isohyetic pole alignment

  • Downslope retaining rope

  • Gully net determination

  • Predetermined breaking point at the lower bearing rope

You are not familiar with these technical expressions or you want to deepen your knowledge in technical rockfall protection in general? Than our course is exactly what you are looking for.

The ASDRR is offering a multiday field excursion to the Cultural Landscape Wachau, which is a valley in Lower Austria. The picturesque landscape of Wachau valley is located 80km east of Vienna and stretches along the Danube River. Its valuable landscape in terms of architecture, urban design, and agricultural use, principally for the cultivation of vines leads to the inscription as "Wachau Cultural Landscape" in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites, in 2000 (UNESCO, 2020).

During this course we will go through all aspects of the technical rock fall protection, starting from data acquisition towards a protection structure installation.

We will learn how to evaluate a statistical block size measurement to determine the size of the characteristic boulder and hence choosing the right energy class. Furthermore, we will discuss the importance of the appropriate positioning and alignment of a protective structure. During this exercise several questions like “what is a gully net?”, “when do I need it?”, “do I need a downstream retaining rope?“ will come up and will be answered in detail.

After this course you will be able to identify potential rock fall hazards, asses its consequences and have a basic knowledge on the technical rockfall protection system.
